Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships support students pursuing less commonly taught language study and related area/international studies training. The program’s goals are to: (1) develop knowledge and trained personnel in modern foreign language and area/international studies; (2) stimulate foreign language acquisition and fluency; and (3) help develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.
What the Summer FLAS provides: A Summer FLAS Fellowship provides a $3,500 stipend and up to $5,000 for tuition and fees for approved intensive summer language courses (in the U.S. or abroad). Programs approvals take place after awardees are notified.
Summer FLAS eligibility (general):
- Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time at UNC–Chapel Hill by the start of the fellowship.
