This November, 42 K-12 teachers joined CMEIS and the other UNC Area Studies Centers in Chapel Hill for International Education Week! Each year, the North Carolina Department of Instruction’s Global Education Division sponsors a week-long celebration for educators and students to connect and explore global connections.
In collaboration with our partners, CMEIS hosted a day of professional development centered on the theme of “Shaping the Future: Climate, Science, and Social Movements in a Changing World.” We were especially delighted to welcome Abdedaim Battioui, PhD Student in UNC’s in Environment, Ecology, and Energy program, to discuss Morocco’s energy strategy. In this engaging talk, he discussed energy transition as a path to economic and political sovereignty, examining the interplay between energy security, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, and equity.

Thanks again to NCDPI Global Education and the UNC Area Studies Centers – UNC African Studies Center, Carolina Asia Center, UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian & East European Studies, and the UNC Institute for the Study of the Americas – for making this free professional development opportunity available to local educators.
