The Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies hosted Professor Nadine Sinno, who shared insights on space, belonging, new artistic forms in Lebanon in her talk “Beirut is a Cement Paradise/بيروت جنة إسمنت,” based on her new book, A War of Colors: Graffiti and Street Art in Postwar Beirut.
In her engaging talk, Professor Sinno provided contextual analysis of graffiti in Lebanon, shedding light on its multifaceted roles in a society shaped by conflict and resilience. She emphasized how street art serves not only as a form of expression but also as a powerful medium for social commentary and community identity. The event drew a crowd of UNC faculty, staff, students, and community members, all eager to engage in discussion about the intersection of art, politics, and culture in Lebanon and the larger Middle East region.
