In the summer of 2023, I received a FLAS fellowship and had the opportunity to study traditional Arabic in Rabat, Morocco, at the Qalam wa Lawh language institute. My time there was intense and transformative; I immersed myself in advanced Arabic studies, dedicating three hours each day to rigorous language learning. The program not only deepened my language proficiency but also allowed me to explore Morocco through organized field trips and connect with a diverse group of students who shared my passion for Arabic and Moroccan culture.
The FLAS experience was so inspiring that I returned to Morocco the following summer, this time to work. I secured a position at the Youth Policy Center, a nonprofit organization where I conducted policy research, attended workshops, and used Arabic in a professional context. This experience provided a raw and authentic glimpse into the practical use of language beyond academic settings. It also made me realize that I am fully capable of working abroad and integrating into Moroccan society—not just as a student, but as an active and engaged resident.
While the FLAS program was incredibly rewarding, inspiring me to immerse myself further in Moroccan culture and giving me the confidence to work abroad, there are a few things I wish I had known before going. I missed out on opportunities to engage with the local culture and advance my language skills outside the classroom. The language center, though academically enriching, could sometimes feel isolating. I regret not exploring more beyond the set agenda, as I tended to stick to familiar places out of fear of branching out. I was also unaware of many events and opportunities where I could have practiced Arabic in real-world settings.
It wasn’t until I returned to Morocco the following summer that I realized just how much there was to do. Looking back, I wish I had taken the initiative to attend think tank workshops, join game nights at local cafes, or participate in cultural events hosted by various institutions. These experiences would have greatly enriched my time in Morocco and further developed my language skills.
For future students embarking on a similar journey, I encourage you to take full advantage of being abroad. While your studies are important, don’t let them confine you to the classroom. Break away from the structured environment and immerse yourself in the local culture as much as possible. Seek out opportunities to practice your language skills in everyday settings, whether it’s through attending local events, engaging in conversations with residents, or simply exploring the city beyond the usual spots. The more you push yourself to engage with the community, the more enriching and memorable your experience will be. Embrace the challenge of stepping out of your comfort zone, and you’ll find that the rewards are immeasurable.
