The Woolf Institute, which specialises in the study of relations between Jews, Christians, and Muslims, invites applications for the position of Academic Director of the Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations. The appointment begins Summer 2013, the exact date to be negotiated with the candidate. The field of interest and academic specialisation are open but the candidate must demonstrate expertise in some aspect of Muslim-Jewish relations. We would welcome candidates engaged in one or more of the following areas of research: multiculturalism in contemporary Europe; Middle East politics and Muslim-Jewish relations; Ottoman or Mediterranean history, and the comparative study of law, culture, and religion. Practical experience in dialogue, reconciliation, and cooperation would also be welcomed.

The successful candidate should be able to lead independent research projects and secure funding, represent the Centre for the media and in other public venues, direct the activities of the Centre, including running conferences and seminars, and manage the Centre budget. The candidate must be able to teach at a postgraduate level in Middle East Studies and to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
As the Director of the Centre, the successful candidate will be responsible for raising its academic and public profile and maintaining a reputation for balance and rigorous scholarship. The candidate must be able to work collegially within a small team. In particular, the incoming Academic Director will need to coordinate with the development officer to sustain funding for the Centre and the other academic staff in building the academic reputation of the Woolf Institute.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. and preferably postdoctoral experience. The successful candidate will be expected to know at least Arabic and preferably another relevant Middle Eastern or European language.
