Studies in Islam, Renison University College, affiliated with the University of Waterloo, invites applications for a full time three year definite term faculty position in Studies in Islam and Arabic Language.
We are seeking candidates who have earned their Ph.D. by the time of appointment in the domain of Arabic language, linguistics, or a related area. Experience teaching Modern Standard Arabic at the University level, familiarity with proficiency based language teaching and testing, native or near native command of Arabic, and ability to teach at all levels of Arabic is required. Familiarity with use of technology in language teaching is desirable. Excellent written and spoken English is required.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching along with a proven track record of scholarly publications with demonstrated potential to conduct further scholarly research is required; an ability for interdisciplinary work and interest in collaborating with other disciplines in the Humanities and beyond is necessary; a demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty and students; an ability to develop outreach opportunities; and an ability to design, develop and deliver Arabic/English syllabi and language courses in conjunction with other Arabic language instructors is required in this role.
An Assistant Professor of Studies in Islam and Arabic Studies will teach and conduct research in his/her area of expertise and engage in service to the institute, discipline and community as required.
The ideal candidate will teach five courses per academic year at all levels of Arabic courses as well as other courses in history, civilization and culture of Islam and Muslims, as required by the department.
The candidate will implement the newly adopted standardized Arabic studies curriculum and align it with the guidelines of American Council of Teaching of Foreign Languages. He/she will also conduct pre and post assessment language proficiency tests as well as design, manage and conduct courses for the Waterloo Intensive Summer Arabic Institute.
