Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, the Center of Islamic Theology, invites applications for two Professorships (W1) of Islamic Theology starting October 1, 2011.

Professors are sought for the following subjects:

  • Hadith Studies and Prophetic Tradition hadīt
  • Islamic Jurisprudence fiqh
  • Systematic Rational Theology kalâm
  • Islamic Philosophy falsafa and Ethics akhlâq
  • Islamic Mysticism tasawwuf
  • Islamic History and Contemporary Culture
  • Islamic Religious Education

The University intends to fill one or two professorships, depending on the quality of applicants. If appropriate candidates are not found, the unfilled positions will be re-advertized at a later date.

Successful candidates will be offered civil service contracts for an initial period of four years. It is planned that a positive evaluation during that time will lead to a two-year extension. Candidates must be competent to teach and carry out research in at least one of the subjects listed above, and be of Islamic faith. Applications must make it clear what qualifications the candidate has for his or her specified field of expertise. Successful candidates will be expected to cooperate with their future colleagues at the Center and with other University departments. They must teach between four and six periods per week during the semester, and will be expected to carry out independent research activities in the field of Islamic Theology. Holders of these professorships are to qualify themselves for full professorships at a university or equivalent institution of higher education by independently exercising the duty to carry out research and teaching at the University.

Candidates must have an outstanding PhD in a relevant area, publications in academic journals, teaching experience and good knowledge of German.

The University seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges qualified women academics to apply for these positions.

Disabled candidates will be given preference over other equally qualified applicants.

Please send your application (including resume, career history, copies of certificates, list of publications, list of courses taught, description of joint research and focus of future research) to: Rektor der Universität Tübingen, Professor Dr. Bernd Engler, Wilhelmstr. 5, 72074 Tübingen, Germany.

Deadline: August 04, 2011.
