The Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) at Oxford is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for teaching and research. The study of these disciplines at Oxford has a long and distinguished history and the department is one of the largest in the field in the UK. The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) is one of the fifteen constituent parts of the Social Sciences Division at Oxford. It represents a commitment by the University to enhancing teaching and research in Area Studies.
The Department and the School, in association with St Antony’s College, now seek jointly to appoint an inspirational teacher and accomplished research scholar to an Associate Professorship in Politics or International Relations with specialization in the Middle East. Applications are welcomed from outstanding candidates with teaching experience and a strong research background in Politics or International Relations and expertise in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
Essential criteria include a completed doctorate in political science, international relations or a closely related field; an outstanding, world-class portfolio of research and publications as well as an exciting future research programme.
An ability to work with source materials in one or more of the non-Western languages of MENA is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage actively in research and to contribute through world-class publications to the departments’ and University’s international reputation for research excellence. The post-holder will also offer teaching in both the DPIR and OSGA, supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, contribute to administration and examining, and act as a College Adviser for graduate students.
The post will be held in conjunction with a Governing Body Fellowship at St Antony’s College. The post-holder will have a room for teaching and research in the Department of Politics of International Relations as well as at the Middle East Centre of St Antony’s.
Appointments to Associate Professorships are confirmed as permanent on successful completion of a review during the first 5 years. Any offer made will be subject to pre-employment checks.
The post is offered on a full-time basis, available from 1 September 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
