The University of Leuven, Belgium, is one of the oldest European research universities (founded in 1425). The Faculty of Arts is currently offering an open rank professorship in the field of politics, culture and society of the contemporary Middle East. A PhD must be in hand when the appointment begins. The successful candidate must be prepared to provide instruction in the field of politics, culture and society of the contemporary Middle East as well as participate in the language acquisition of Modern Standard Arabic at all levels of the teaching program. The teaching load is approximately 40%. At the University of Leuven, the teaching language is Dutch. A candidate who does not know Dutch must reach the EFR C1- level within three years (after commencement of the appointment). In the meantime, teaching in English is allowed.
