The Department of Political Science has an open climate that encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalization, environmental politics as well as European studies. We offer several degree programmes at both the undergraduate and masters levels: Bachelors and Masters programmes in Political Science and European studies, as well as a Masters programme in International Administration and Global Governance. Furthermore, The Department also offers a number of courses in Political science, European studies, and General education courses open to attending other university programmes as well as mid-career students.?All courses at masters level are taught in English, while courses at bachelors level are taught in both English and Swedish. We have a total of 1,300 students enrolled in our courses, and 125 people are employed at the Department.?The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.
Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is a new large-scale data collection and research-program at the Department of Political Science. At the moment the program engage 12 staff members and guest researchers. V-dem is now offering 1-3 positions as Postdoctor to the new research program GLD-G.
The Program on Governance and Local Development at Gothenburg (GLD-G) is a new program being established at the University of Gothenburg to foster interdisciplinary, policy relevant research on governance and local development. The program is being established by Professor Ellen Lust of Yale University, whose recruitment to University of Gothenburg is being facilitated by support from the Swedish Research Council. Professor Ellen Lust founded a Program on Governance and Local Development (GLD) at Yale University, seehttp://gld.commons.yale.edu. GLD currently has 8 associated researchers and 3 project-related staff, and it has been engaged in collaborative research projects with the World Bank and United Nations Development Program. GLD-G will be similar in goal and design.
Specific subject description
Political science is a social science discipline concerned with the study of the state, nation, government, and politics and policies of government on a national and international perspective.
A Postdoc is expected to conduct research (.80FTE) in collaboration with Professor Ellen Lust, as well as other members of the GLD-G research team. The research fellow may be asked to teach in the department and fill administrative or assistance functions in GLD-G up to .20FTE.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Agreement about fix-termed position as Postdoctor and in local regulations Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. The two-year GLD-G Postdoc is open to candidates who have (at the time of appointment) received a PhD in political science or related field within the last three years and who have a record of accomplishments in one or more of the following areas: local governance, development, service provision, non-state governance, the Middle East, North Africa, and/or other regions in the Global South, survey methodology and related empirical methods. The person who has acquired a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are considered to be a leave of absence due to illness, service in the total defence, commissions of trust within professional and student organisations or parental leave or other similar circumstances. Previous participation in larger-scale research- and other projects are meritorious. Excellence in English is expected, competence in Arabic and/or French is a merit.
