The University of Exeter and Tsinghua University


This position marks the next stage of an exciting collaboration between the University of Exeter and Tsinghua University. The role is a permanent position and the initial collaboration arrangement between the Univeristies will run for three years, to be reviewed and extended by mutual agreement.


You will be based in the Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies in the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at Exeter and will spend 3 – 5 months of each year working at Tsinghua’s Institute for International and Area Studies and will play a key role in developing new research opportunities between Exeter and Tsinghua in the field of Area Studies.


We are looking for a leading international figure with the ability to attract high quality researchers at doctoral and postdoctoral level to drive this partnership. You should have a research profile concentrated in the anthropology, history, social sciences or cultures of the Middle East with a particular preference for expertise in Palestine Studies, Gulf Studies, or the Politics and International Relations of the Middle East. Your profile will contribute to and grow the research activities of the University of Exeter’s Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS) and Tsinghua University’s Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS).


As an innovative researcher with a strong and current publications record of high quality and international standing, and a track record of research funding acquisition, you will use your international networks of contacts and partners to coordinate research projects and teams across borders.
