The University of Arizona (UA) College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) invites applications for a new assistant professor (tenure-track, academic year) position in Environmental Studies of the Middle East and North Africa, broadly defined, to begin Fall 2016.

The successful candidate will join the university’s vibrant interdisciplinary communities of SBS, environmental studies, and Middle East and North African studies specialists.

We are interested in a broad range of social science and historical approaches to human/environment studies. The successful candidate will be well qualified to engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching; have an active research agenda, with research in or centrally related to the Middle East and/or North Africa; have potential for externally supported research; and have an interest in participating in outreach activities. Candidates are expected to have the PhD in hand by July 1, 2016. Proficiency in at least one Middle Eastern language is highly desirable (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish or a related language).

The UA features an extensive program in Middle Eastern and North African studies. The School of Middle Eastern & North African Studies (MENAS) offers a BA, MA and PhD, and includes an Arabic Flagship program. Also in SBS are the American Institute for Maghrib Studies; Arizona Center for Judaic Studies; Center for Middle Eastern Studies, a Title VI National Resource Center; and Middle East Studies Association.

Known for its support of interdisciplinary endeavors, the university has made study of the environment a strategic priority. UA has notable strengths in environmental sciences and social sciences. Related units include Institute of the Environment; Center for Mediterranean Archaeology and the Environment; Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science and School of Natural Resources & the Environment in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. UA also features two related Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs: Arid Lands Resource Sciences and a Global Change PhD minor. The School of Geography & Development offers an Environmental Studies BA.
