The Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at the University of Arizona is a Title VI National Resource Center supported by the U.S. Department of Education. The Center supports and promotes Middle East language- and Middle East studies-related teaching and research throughout the University, and fosters understanding of the Middle East through an extensive program of outreach to schools and the wider community. The Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona seeks candidates for a full-time (1.0) FTE position of Assistant Director. The position will be a year-to-year professional appointment, with the possibility of renewal. The selected candidate will coordinate day-to-day operation of the Center; oversee Center activities abroad; coordinate funding opportunities for students and faculty; coordinate academic lecture series, workshops, conferences, and other events; prepare promotional materials and publications; mentor students, especially regarding study abroad; and represent the Center to a diverse community of Center members, students, faculty members, and members of the public at events on and off campus. Work for the position will involve some duties on evenings and weekends, and some travel to national meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees day-to-day operation of the Center
  • Manages center activities, some of which take place on evenings or weekends
  • Manages Project Global Officer (GO) grant in coordination with MENAS
  • Coordinates FLAS fellowship program
  • Oversees CMES Abroad (e.g. study abroad programs, international internships)
  • Coordinates CMES funding opportunities, including internship scholarships, faculty research support, and student and faculty travel grants
  • Prepares promotional materials and publications; updates and adds new material to the CMES Drupal-based website as co-webmaster
  • Organizes academic lecture series, workshops and conferences, and other events in collaboration with CMES Director and the Director of Educational Outreach
  • Identifies grant opportunities and works with colleagues to prepare grant proposals
  • Implements grant-funded activities and contributes to grant reports
  • Is CMES liaison to and serves as a member of the CMES Governing Board
  • Supervises administrative associate and some student workers
  • Mentors students informally, especially regarding study abroad in the Middle East
  • Develops fundraising opportunities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • Two years of experience in a Middle East-related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in office management and supervision of staff
  • Ability to interact well with diverse constituencies
  • Excellent organizational skills utilizing current and appropriate technologies
