Sunan Kalijaga International Postdoctoral Fellowships (SKIPF)

Closing date: July 31, 2016

Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country known for its vibrant democratic practices and its pivotal role in Muslim’s civic culture. Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga/Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University  in Yogyakarta, in particular, has been the country’s leading center for studies on vernacular Islam, state-Islam relations as well as contemporary social changes in Muslim societies.

Sunan Kalijaga International Postdoctoral Fellowships (SKIPF) aim to attract outstanding researchers to UIN Sunan Kalijaga to contribute to and enhance the university’s research strengths and its research culture.

Why join us?

SKIPF is the first of its kind offered in Indonesian universities whose wider research focuses are on religion and society. A considerable number of professors, with various expertise from Arabic literature to Islamic jurisprudence, had long supported UIN Sunan Kalijaga to become a well-respected Islamic university both within the country and beyond. The knowledge combination between classical Islam and contemporary social theories, widely practiced across the university, creates a distinct discursive tradition among the university’s academia. Many of the university academia have written in internationally acclaimed journals as well as gain recognition from the public, industry and government alike.

Applications are welcome from Ph.D.s  whose research focuses fall into the broader theme of Islam and its societies.

The fellows are responsible to write 2 (five) articles (the length of each is 25-30 pages), expected to be ready for submission in internationally acclaimed journals at the end of their fellowship. They are also obliged to teach academic writing to Indonesian fellows.

Term and remuneration

SKIPF will be available from September 1, to December 30, 2016 and can be renewed for the second term (January-May 2017). In addition to the accommodation provided by the university, the International fellows will receive a monthly stipend USD 1,000 and a return ticket. Considering Yogyakarta’s fairly low living costs, this allowance will allow fellows to have a decent living standard and possibly personal savings. The fellows are allowed to receive additional funding supports in conjunction with this fellowship. In addition, the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga (Prof. K.H. Yudian Wahyudi, Ph.D.) is pleased to provide the international fellows  with a Yogyakarta-Bali return ticket for Christmas vacation.
