The Ohio State University’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures invites applicants for a position as tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate professor of Islamic Studies. The ability to teach all levels of undergraduate and graduate courses in Islamic Studies is required, as well as advanced research competence in classical Arabic. We are looking particularly for a scholar knowledgeable in the textual traditions of Islam and well versed in current methods in the study of religion. The successful candidate will be expected to play a leading role in supervising the department’s Islamic Studies undergraduate degree program and to advise doctoral students in collaboration with other departmental faculty. It is hoped that the successful candidate will contribute to OSU’s interdepartmental strength in religious studies and classical, late ancient, and medieval scholarship. Benefits are competitive. 

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Islamic Studies or closely related field; advanced ability in classical Arabic; proven record of publications of research in the field. Advanced ability in another language of Islamic textual traditions, such as Persian or Turkish, is preferred. Applicants must show a record of (or high promise of) maintaining an active program of research, publication, and teaching. The language of instruction at OSU is English.
