Position Summary

Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy is seeking a one-year postdoctoral fellowship on Islamist movements in the Middle East beginning fall 2015. The scholar is expected to work independently to pursue his/her research agenda and report to the Institute’s Academic Affairs Director and the Institute’s Founding Director.

Funding is expected to cover 12-month appointment, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

Two years work experience in government, think tanks, academia or the private sector on issues pertinent to Islamist movements across the region.
Skills Required

• Demonstrated deep understanding of Islamist political movements in one or more of the following contexts — Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco — and the relations of these movements to the policies of regional governments, the United States, and the broader international community.
• Demonstrated ability to formulate policy recommendations, initiate and engage in creative approaches toward advancing policy, including the ability to initiate projects and balance multiple projects.
• Sufficient knowledge of Arabic, Turkish and/or Persian to be able to engage with source materials in these languages.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to deal with people with sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
Skills Preferred

• Strong personal network in the MENA region, including local think tanks, academic institutions and media.
• Previous experience conducting Middle East policy research and outreach both nationally and internationally.
• Previous collaboration with regional think tanks and/or academic institutions on projects related to his/her areas of expertise.
Physical Demands

No extraordinary physical demands. Must be able to travel across campus to attend various meetings and events.
Working Conditions

Standard office environment. Candidate must be able to work at a computer and desk for up to 8 hours per day.
