Grade 7: £30,434 – £37,394 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Early Career Fellowship in Arabic/Islamic History (1000-1500) from an outstanding academic at an early stage of his/her career, the appointment to commence as soon as possible.

This is a fixed-term research post to December 2015 that will also provide core replacement teaching for Professor Judith Pfeiffer, who is on research leave; it is possible that it may be extended for some months.

The Fellow will cooperate closely with other staff members teaching Arabic language and literature, Islamic history, and Islamic studies, and will be required to (a) give up to an average of 6 hours of teaching per week during each full term (there are 3 terms, and the ‘full term’ period within each term is 8 weeks); (b) examine, supervise dissertations and participate in the admissions process for postgraduate and undergraduate students; (c) conduct research into any aspect of Arabic/Islamic History (1000-1500).

You must have a primary field of expertise in Arabic/Islamic History (1000-1500) as it is reflected in the Arabic written culture of the period, e.g. historiography, documentary texts, biography, geography, or travel literature; be qualified to undertake graduate and undergraduate teaching on Arabic/Islamic history 1000-1500, research methods and Arabic historical text classes; be able to teach Arabic texts. Applicants must have obtained a doctorate in an appropriate field by the time of appointment and should not normally have completed it earlier than 1 October 2008. Applications from candidates who have completed a doctorate earlier than 1 October 2008 will be considered if they have had a career change or break.

Knowledge of an appropriate second Islamic language (e.g. Persian/Turkish) is desirable, but not a requirement, as is teaching experience in one or more of the areas of Arabic/Islamic history 1000-1500, research methods and Arabic historical texts.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 10 October 2014.
