Assistant Professor (The culture and history of Islam) – Miami University


The Miami University Department of Comparative Religion seeks to hire a tenure track assistant professor in the culture and history of Islam, to teach courses in Comparative Religion, maintain an active research agenda and provide service to the institution.  PhD required by time of appointment.  The successful candidate must be sufficiently trained in classical Arabic to teach courses in Islamic sacred texts, and be familiar with the theories and methods of Comparative Religion.  Teaching responsibilities will include courses that introduce students to the study of religion, in addition to courses specifically on Islam.  The specific area of research is open to any aspect or geographical area of Islam.  Additional desirable qualities include ability to participate in Miami’s many interdisciplinary programs, such as the Middle East and Islamic Studies Program, and the ability to teach classes introducing students to Islam in the contemporary world.  Send letter of application, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendations to Stephen Nimis, Department of Comparative  Religion, Miami University, Oxford, OH  45056.  Electronic submissions are welcome to  Screening of applications begins November 1, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled.  Miami University is an EOE/AA employer with smoke-free campuses.  Right to Know Consumer Information   Hard copy upon request.
