Application Deadline: May 27, 2019
A partnership between the Arab Council for the Social Sciences
, Lebanon Support
, the Orient-Institut Beirut
, and the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung
Beirut Office, the Bassem Chit Fellowship for the Study of Activism aims to give early career scholars the opportunity to conduct research on activism in the Arab world. It invites them to examine political processes from below, with a focus on contentious politics, and collective action while steering away from the idea of the cultural exceptionalism of the “area”. The fellowship particularly seeks to encourage research that explores the genealogy of mobilizing actors, their action repertoires, their framing processes, their modes of actions, and their demands.
Terms of the Fellowship
The fellowship provides 12 months of full support with a total stipend of $34,000 covering living expenses and research expenses.
Affiliation and Mentorship during the Fellowship
The fellow will be affiliated to Lebanon Support, and mentored by Dr. Marie-Noëlle Abi Yaghi, a founding member and the director of Lebanon Support. Dr. Abi Yaghi is also an associate researcher at the Institut Français du Proche-Orient (IFPO), and a member of the Lebanese Sociological Association.
