Responsibilities will include academic teaching, research and service and outreach in the field of Arabic and Islam Studies.
The postholder will be required to pursue a coherent research programme in the field of Classical Arabic and Islamic Studies by making clear connection to the developments in contemporary Islam. The candidate is expected to have outstanding scientific results of an international level. The postholder will be required to apply for competitive national and international funding, and to actively help building future research projects.
The postholder is required to teach several courses, at both undergraduate and graduate levels in Arabic and Islam Studies, with a clear commitment to the quality of the programme as a whole. These courses will include:
– Modern Standard Arabic (several modules)
– Introduction to Islam
– Qur’an and Islamic Religious Thought
– Seminar of Arabic-Islamic Arts
– Current Events in the Middle East and North Africa
The postholder must meet up with academic expectations in terms of level and orientation according to the educational vision of KU Leuven. The successful candidate will be able to make use of the possibilities for educational professionalization offered by the Faculty and University.
Main teaching responsibilities are located on the Faculty’s campus in Leuven, but the successful candidate should be prepared to take on teaching assignments on other campuses of the Faculty or/and in other related programmes.
The postholder will be required to contribute actively to the administrative and management duties of the department and collaboration with other academic programmes and other non-academic professional field.
You hold a PhD in Arabic and Islam Studies (or an equivalent relevant degree).
You master Modern Standard Arabic at native or near-native level (reading, writing and listening). Proficiency in a spoken dialect (speaking and listening) is desirable.
You have outstanding didactic teaching qualities and an excellent research and publication track record in Arabic and Islam Studies. The quality of your research is clearly reflected in high-quality international publications.
You possess organisational skills and have a collegial spirit.
Your application file should include a developed research proposal for the coming years (maximally two pages) and a profile statement outlining your view on teaching (maximally two pages).
Proficiency in English is required.
The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings.
Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required standard.

You will be appointed as Assistant Professor in the tenure-track system for a period of five years. Upon positive evaluation, you will be promoted to tenured Associate Professor.
