inan_gul_biostatistics-1The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health welcomes Gul Inan, PhD, to the Department of Biostatistics as the P.K. Sen Distinguished Visiting Professor in Biostatistics. Inan will serve in this position until June 14, 2016, during which time she will conduct research and interact with Gillings School faculty and students and the broader university community.
The professorship recruits aspiring scholars in statistical science from countries broadly defined as “developing” with respect to their statistics and biostatistics workforce. Inan was selected from a highly competitive field of applicants following an international search by the biostatistics department.
She obtained bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in statistics from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and most recently served as a visiting scholar in the School of Statistics at the University of Minnesota.
Inan’s research interests focus on methodological and computational problems related to regression analysis of correlated and longitudinal data, including high-dimensional covariates. Additionally, she has a special interest in the development of R packages for various purposes to serve both applied statisticians and practitioners.
“I have a great passion to learn, to do research and to share my knowledge, which led me to consider a career in academia,” Inan said. “As an international scholar, I am thrilled to be a part of this excellent community at an early stage in my academic career. This experience will be definitely a milestone in my life.”
The biostatistics department looks forward to benefiting from Inan’s experience in regards to both methodological and interdisciplinary research, and expects that she will expand the work begun in Chapel Hill upon her return to Turkey.
The visiting professorship is named for Pranab Kumar Sen, PhD, who has been a UNC Gillings faculty member for more than 50 years. Sen is the Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and also teaches in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research.
