Haverford College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Religion, specifically in Islamic Studies, at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall 2018. A more advanced junior appointment with postdoctoral or other teaching and research experience will be considered.


Haverford expects that the successful candidate will maintain a strong research program that engages broad theoretical interests in religious studies, and one that generates critical inquiry in the classroom. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at all levels of the curriculum to a student body of diverse backgrounds and interests, contributing to one or more of the concentrations within the Religion department (
The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the Middle East and Islamic Studies concentration, and support one or more additional programs at the College: Africana & African Studies, Comparative Literature, Environmental Studies, Gender & Sexuality Studies, Peace, Justice & Human Rights, and/or Visual Studies. We invite candidates from multiple disciplines and interdisciplinary perspectives, including those who have textual and linguistic competence in the Islamic textual tradition and/or those who do ethnographic and anthropological studies. Completion of the Ph.D. by the time of appointment (July 2018) is required.
