PROFESSORSHIP (W3) FOR CONTEMPORARY HISTORY AND POLITICS IN THE MIDDLE EAST in the Faculty of Humanities commencing as soon as possible,
ref. no. 2277/W3

The successful candidate is expected to teach and conduct research in the field of contemporary history and politics in the Middle East. As Professor of the Faculty of Humanities the incumbent will have teaching obligations of one course per semester (two teaching hours per week) and examination duties. She or he is further expected to participate actively in the instruction of students pursuing a teaching degree in the respective discipline.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

The position as Director of the GIGA Institute of Middle East Studies (renewable 5-year terms) includes the permanent positions of researcher at the GIGA and the above-named professorship. Presence at the GIGA is required. As IMES Director (see also Section 6 of the GIGA Charter), the successful candidate will mainly:

•           conduct and direct research at the IMES (to be developed in conjunction with GIGA’s Research Programs as part of the Institute’s matrix structure),
•           manage the IMES (including duties as member of the GIGA Executive Board and other bodies, mentoring and pastoral responsibilities towards staff, and responsibility for quality assurance), and
•           interact closely with policy makers (especially at the Federal Foreign Office) and represent the IMES in the media and to the broader public.

Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 15 HmbHG.

Further criteria:
Publications on contemporary history and politics of the Middle East; experience in acquiring and carrying out externally funded projects; experience in policy advice and knowledge transfer, as well as organizational and leadership experience should be demonstrated.

Academic training and expertise in contemporary history, political science, or related fields; outstanding academic record with a clear fit to the GIGA’s research profile. Research specialization in one or more of the GIGA Research Programs will be an advantage. Proven international academic experience, especially well-established record of working on and with the Middle East, including language skills relevant to the region; English proficiency; and, if applicable, the willingness to learn German in due time.

We are looking for scholars with excellent leadership qualities and communication skills. Following hearings, selected candidates will be assessed to ascertain skills in the areas of management and human resources.
