Freie Universitaet Berlin, Department of History and Cultural Studies, Institute of Islamic Studies invites applications for a tenured Professorship in Classical Islamic Studies (salary grade W 2)

The successful applicant will be required to cover the area named above in research and teaching. Appointment requirements are governed by Article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz). The successful candidate will have international teaching experience and excellent research results in the field of classical Islam (history and historiography, Qur’an and Hadith studies, philosophy, Sufism, and/or theology). She or he will possess excellent Arabic language skills as well as knowledge of at least one additional oriental language. Candidates will be prepared to teach in both German and English. Furthermore, she or he will have experience with acquiring funding for, and carrying out externally funded research.

The appointee will participate in the teaching and research activities of the Institute of Islamic Studies and the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies at which she or he will act as a Principal Investigator. The appointee is expected to participate in relevant research alliances of the Berlin-Brandenburg area, to design and apply for joint research projects, and to intensify international cooperation in the field of Islamic Studies. Furthermore, she or he will participate in the activities of the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender and Diversity Studies at the Department of History and Cultural Studies.
