Panel Discussion: Afghanistan in Context (virtual)

August 20, 2021 | 3:00 pm - 4:15 pm

Over the past two weeks, events in Afghanistan have unfolded with dizzying speed. The images of Afghans desperate to flee the country and Taliban leadership flanked by heavily armed fighters in the presidential palace are shocking to many.

How can we understand the situation on the ground in Afghanistan right now?

Why are people fleeing and who is most at risk?

Why did the country fall to the Taliban so quickly?

What can and should the U.S. and the international community be doing now?

Please join us for a virtual discussion with panelists:

Navin Bapat, UNC-Chapel Hill

Naazneen Barma, University of Denver

Palwasha Kakar, U.S. Institute of Peace

Dipali Mukhopadhyay, Colombia University

Idean Salehyan, University of North Texas
Moderated by Patricia Sullivan, UNC-Chapel Hill and Director, Triangle Institute for Security Studies
