UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty, and staff are invited to join us for these remaining events in the Carolina Seminar on Middle East Studies, organized by Dr. Sarah Shields in conjunction with her course, “HIST 276: The Modern Middle East”. Each lecture features a guest expert on contemporary events.


March 29: 5: Iran Nuclear Treaty

Pouya Alimagham is a historian of the modern Middle East at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He specializes on Iran, Iraq, and the Levant, focusing on such themes as revolutionary and guerrilla movements, imperialism, representation and Orientalism, “Political Islam” and post-Islamism, and the intersections therein.

Nabil al-Takriti is Associate Professor of History at the University of Mary Washington. With scholarly interests that include Ottoman History, the modern Middle East, and Humanitarian Affairs, Prof. Al-Tikriti is primarily responsible for the department’s offerings in Middle East History.
