The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies in the American University of Sharjah invites applications for faculty positions in Arabic Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor beginning in the Fall 2015. The successful candidates will have Ph. D. in Arabic studies (literary/cultural studies, intellectual history, modern Islam, Arabic, historiography, classical literature and literary criticism, or related fields). A native or near-native proficiency in Arabic and a strong command of English are expected. Strong scholarly record/potential and relevant teaching experience are also expected.

The language of instruction at AUS is English. AUS is located in the emirate of Sharjah, adjacent to Dubai, UAE. Founded in 1997 by H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad al-Qassimi, member of the Supreme Council of the UAE, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of AUS. AUS is an independent, not-for-profit coeducational university in the Gulf, serving some 5,500 students of 82 nationalities. The American University of Sharjah (AUS) is accredited by the Commission of Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Review of applications will begin immediately.

Applicants should have experience in and/or familiarity with the North American higher educational system, and experience in dealing with cultural and educational needs of a linguistically and culturally diverse student population. The ability to contribute to other courses offered by the Department will be a distinct advantage.
