The Department of Architecture and Design in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the American University of Beirut invites applications to Al Mu’alim Mohamed Awad Binladin Chair in Architecture in the Islamic World at the rank of Full Professor commencing September 2012.

“We expect the Al Mu’allim Mohamed Awad Binladin Chair in Architecture in Islamic World to take the lead in building a multidisciplinarycenter on the built environment in the Arab and Muslim world at AUB to:

  • Generate historical and theoretical critical discourse on the built environment.
  • Encourage interaction between the worlds of practice and scholarship on this important topic.
  • Sponsor advanced research that focuses on regional issues of concern in the Arab and Muslim World.
  • Work closely with other institutions and programs regionally and abroad.

The Al Mu’allim Mohamed Awad Binladin Chair would be expected to make a significant contribution to our academic programs and participate and help organize related activities such as workshops, seminars, and conferences. We would anticipate holding an annual event – a seminar or symposium – involving the chair, to review activities undertaken under the auspices of the chair and/or to explore topics relevant to architecture in Islamic societies.”

Candidates must have a PhD in architectural history with a specialty and an established record of research and publications in Islamic architecture. The preference is for Islamic architecture in the Arab World and knowledge of or involvement in the contemporary architectural practice in the region. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and direct the Center for Advanced Study of the Built Environment, be affiliated with the graduate program in History Theory and Criticism, teach both undergraduate and graduate core courses as well as electives in their area of specialty, advance the research/creative activities of the Department and contribute to ongoing curriculum assessment and development.
