Sheikh Zayid Chair of Arabic and Islamic Studies
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut is seeking an
outstanding internationally‐established scholar to fill the distinguished Sheikh Zayid Chair of
Arabic and Islamic Studies at the level of Associate or Full Professor, to begin on August 15,
2019.
Candidates for the Sheikh Zayid Chair are required to have made highly distinguished and
internationally acclaimed contributions in one or more academic fields of Arabic and Islamic
Studies as conceived broadly (encompassing: philology and critical editions of Arabic texts,
classical literature, intellectual history; civilization studies; Islamicate societies and cultures;
material culture and manuscripts; the study of Islam and Muslims in the modern and
contemporary world; social, political, and legal thought; and the academic study of Qur’an,
Sufism and Hadith). Candidates who combine these fields or conduct research in more than
one area will be given preference.
The Sheikh Zayid Chair will be expected to develop research activities within academic fields
of Arabic and Islamic Studies, encourage collaboration and interaction between
departments in AUB in which Islamic Studies plays a role, and foster international liaisons
with the community of scholars in the field world‐wide.
The Chair is based in the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (CAMES) where the MA
program in Islamic Studies is housed, and the successful candidate is expected to offer
graduate and undergraduate courses and supervise research in relevant fields at CAMES,
the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages, and/or the Department of History
and Archaeology.
The language of instruction at AUB and CAMES is English. Depending on the areas of
expertise, the Sheikh Zayid Chair may have a joint appointment between CAMES and
another department. The selected Chair will be offered a highly competitive salary and
benefits package.
