In building on the work of the KIP Project, the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business (OSB) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) is inviting applications from outstanding candidates to fill two Postdoctoral Researcher positions on our global team. The positions starts November 1 2018 and runs for 16-months.
This is a research-based project aiming to explore women’s contribution to the Arab MENA economies, and as such, it will involve several rounds of primary and secondary data collection initiatives in various countries across the region.
Our goal, in partnership with local country researchers, is to engage multiple economic stakeholders in order to better understand and positively influence the recruitment, retention and promotion of women in local employer organizations. Designed to focus on the bottom-up indigenous dynamics unique to local cultures/communities, this project pays particular attention to the sociocultural factors that shape the nuanced political and economic inequalities and power relations. The project outcomes include the development and dissemination of a regional economic index, a series of white papers, and country-specific strategies to improve women’s economic participation in the Arab MENA.
Based in Beirut, Lebanon, two 16-month postdoctoral researcher positions are available. These researchers will be part
of the core team responsible for documenting and measuring the status of women’s contributions to the MENA region economies. Both the qualitative and quantitative methodologies are central to the success of the project, and accordingly we are looking to hire:
 One postdoctoral researcher to lead the quantitative components of the project and,
 One postdoctoral researcher to lead the qualitative components.
Individuals are especially encouraged to apply if they have an interest in gender equality or women empowerment and if they have training in one (or a combination) of the following: .
Quantitative research methods and statistics
Econometrics or psychometrics
Traditional schools of economic thought
Qualitative research methods and techniques
Gender studies
Feminist or development economics
Under the supervision of the PI-Team, the Postdoctoral Researcher will work in partnership with a second Postdoctoral Researcher to draft, revise and complete:
1. A comprehensive and critical review of Gender and Arab MENA Economies, including a critical review of relevant and available secondary data (e.g., databases, reports and whitepapers).
2. A series of interim summaries, presentations, mid-term reports and final reports on data collection action-plans, country-based analysis white papers, and regional final reports relating to Gender and Arab MENA Economies.
Specific tasks
Depending on your expertise and skills, you will be given the following tasks:
 Developing surveys, interviews, and focus group design for the collection of data across the Arab MENA.
 Conducting preliminary qualitative OR quantitative analysis.
 Preparing comprehensive and critical reports based on the analysis conducted in 2
 Coordinating program meetings and presentations.
 Writing academic articles for publication in international journal.
 Co-authoring interim and final reports of the work carried out.
Other Duties
 Assists in advising team and country partners on research, statistics, analytic mentors and procedures.
 Undertakes assignments on projects or special initiatives as appropriate.
Qualifications Required
 A completed PhD in a relevant area of study.
 Advanced knowledge of social or organizational science research methods.
 Advanced knowledge of qualitative OR quantitative analysis.
 Academic writing and publication skills.
 Excellent communication, social and organizational skills.
 English language proficiency is a must, and preferences will be given to individuals who are bilingual (English-Arabic) or (English-French), or trilingual (Arabic, English, French).
 Preferences will also be given to those who have working knowledge in research methods, gender studies or business/economics, although others are welcome to apply.
