The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) at The American University of Beirut (AUB) is an independent policy and research institute that aims to produce and develop knowledge that can inform and promote better policy making in and about the Arab world and internationally. IFI is committed to creating a platform for the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas among researchers, civil society actors, policy makers and other stakeholders.
IFI is searching to fill the position of Director at the institute, starting Fall 2014.
Basic Function: The Director will manage all the institute’s operations, including research, planning, budgeting, fundraising, partnership development, public relations, personnel, implementation, and assessment, and will be reporting to the Provost. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing the strategic plan of the institute at AUB, regionally and internationally, by working closely with academics, practitioners, policymakers, students, and members of the general public. The Director will provide research leadership by contributing and shaping the institute’s research agenda and priorities and help initiate new, relevant projects. He/She will provide quality control for the institute’s research plans and outputs including publications and help upgrade existing research programs by closely coordinating with the IFI Faculty Steering Committee, the IFI Advisory Board, the Provost and the AUB faculty.
Duties Performed: 1. Manage overall operations and staff for the institute’s research programs; 2. Develop and implement the mission and strategic plan for IFI by working closely with the IFI Faculty Steering Committee, the Provost and AUB faculty; 3. In coordination with the IFI Faculty Steering Committee, the Director will initiate new research initiatives and evaluate research proposals from potential research partners such as scholars, institutes and universities; 4. Engage university faculty and external constituencies, including policy makers, government officials and civic leaders, and international institutions, in developing new research and public policy initiatives; 5. Oversee the institute’ research initiatives, including launching new projects, partnership development, implementation, evaluation, and reporting on research projects institute-wide; 6. Contribute to periodic reports to Provost, the IFI Advisory Board, funders and other partners; 7. Develop research collaborations between the master’s program in Public Policy and International Affairs and the institute’s research projects; 8. Coordinate relevant outreach activities with the master’s program in Public Policy and International Affairs; 9. Pursue external funding opportunities in coordination with the Provost and with the help of the Office of Advancement; 10. Recruit and interview institute research and administrative staff; 11. Develop and sustain a publication plan for the institute (including discussion papers, policy briefs, and peer review manuscripts); 12. Represent the institute at university meetings and international conferences; 13. Develop and sustain relationships with peer organizations and manage the visibility for the institute at the national, regional and international levels.
Minimum Requirements: 1. Advanced degree, preferably PhD, in public policy, international affairs or a relevant social science field; 2. Substantial research and executive experience in public policy and international affairs in an academic environment or in the public sector; 3. Written and spoken fluency in Arabic preferred.
