​PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, LAW IN MUSLIM CONTEXTS

Salary Range: £45,000 to £90,000 per annum​

Introduction:

​The Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations based in London is seeking to make a Faculty appointment at the level of Professor or Associate Professor in the area of Law in Muslim Contexts. The Institute wishes to promote a comparative and culturally informed understanding of the role that law plays in Muslim contexts.

Responsibilities:

​The person appointed will be required to pursue research in his/her field of specialisation consistent with the interests of the Institute. We encourage interested candidates to review our thematic research foci on the Institute’s website. The appointee will also be expected to play a leading role in the Institute’s research project on ‘Governance for the Public Interest in Muslim Contexts’. Details of the project can be found here.

The person appointed will be required to teach on the Institute’s MA programme in Muslim Cultures. The programme currently offers courses that deal with the evolution of legal traditions as well as contemporary interactions between religion, law and society in Muslim contexts.  The appointee may also be required to organise and contribute to the teaching of Continuing Professional Development courses.

The role may also involve academic management and leadership aspects.

Requirements:

– Advanced qualifications in the field of Law. This may either be an advanced professional qualification (LLM or above) or a doctoral level qualification in a cognate area.

– Considerable knowledge of and contribution to contemporary debates about Muslim legal traditions and their interaction with religion and society

– Theoretical and/or empirical work on issues pertaining to the relationships of Muslim traditions to the theory and practice of democracy, human rights and civil society

– A strong track record of high quality publications

– Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent leadership and administrative skills related to the planning and implementation of research projects and programmes.

Candidates for Associate Professor Level should provide evidence of sustained successful performance in teaching and scholarly activity and should also have demonstrated experience of academic and administrative leadership.

Candidates for appointment at professorial level should be recognized for outstanding professional attainments evidenced by positions of leadership in their current institutions and by membership in professional organisations, on editorial boards and committees. Such persons should be recognized nationally and internationally as authorities in their fields and as outstanding teachers in their areas of specialisation.

Desirable:

– Demonstrated desire to articulate and/or bridge disciplinary boundaries

– Capacity to access material in Arabic and at least one other language of Muslim societies (Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Indonesian, etc.); research work in one of these languages will be preferred

– Ability to work in other European languages relevant to the study of Muslim civilisations
