The Tanner Humanities Center, Hinckley Institute of Politics, and Middle East Center at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City seek a senior scholar-teacher specializing in the Middle East and/or North Africa to fill the Wayne Owens Chair in Middle East Studies for one semester during the academic year 2013-2014. This position is open to scholars in History, Political Science, Literature, Sociology, Anthropology, and Gender Studies among other disciplines.

The Owens Chair will teach a graduate colloquium and an undergraduate class focusing on the Middle East and Muslim World, broadly defined, with an emphasis on the history, culture, and politics of the modern period preferred. The Chair is available for either the fall or spring semester. A key feature of this position is outreach in the form of lectures, interviews, and meetings with diverse communities on and off campus. It is hoped that this appointment will lead to future collaboration between the University of Utah and a university in the Middle East. The Owens Chair is a part of a larger initiative to support Middle Eastern Studies on campus.The Owens Chair carries a stipend of $60,000.
