The School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona invites applications for a tenure-eligible position in Turkish Studies at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in the fall semester 2013. A Ph.D. in a relevant field upon start date is required, a demonstrated potential for excellence in research and teaching is required, but the area of specialization and discipline are open. Teaching requirements in the Turkish Studies program will include courses about modern Turkish culture and society. These courses will complement existing courses in Ottoman history, the anthropology of Turkey, Turkish language and linguistics, and will expand School offerings. The successful candidate will teach courses in his or her field (or interdisciplinary courses) at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and participate in general education/social science or humanities courses as needed. Near native level fluency in modern Turkish is required and competency in Ottoman Turkish will be regarded as an asset. The School seeks to hire a candidate who is able to work with diverse students and colleagues and one who is familiar with a variety of teaching methods. She/he will play a key role in developing the Turkish studies program at the University of Arizona.
