The Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University seeks to fill a position in Classical Islamic Studies at the rank of assistant professor. We seek a scholar with firm grounding in classical Arabic, but whose work may also engage with other languages and cover across regions. Discipline and focus are open, including but not restricted to history (social, intellectual, cultural), science, Sufism, theology or philosophy.

The successful candidate will have broad intellectual interests, a commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education, including teaching in the Columbia College Core Curriculum, and a willingness to contribute to new departmental initiatives. The department is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Applicants should submit a c.v., cover letter, a representative sample of scholarship, and upload their dissertation abstract and a sample course syllabus. They should also arrange to have recommendations sent by three referees. The search committee will begin reviewing applications on 11 November, and will continue until an appointment is made.
