Religion – Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a Tenure-Trackposition in Religion at the Assistant Professor rank beginning in August of the 2019-2020 academic year. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus. Rock Island, Illinois, is part of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents, located about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.
We seek a candidate who specializes in the study of Islam. Additional specializations might include one or more of the following: Gender and Religion, contemporary or historical Islamic movements in Southwest Asia and beyond, Muslim-Christian interactions, and Inter-faith dialogue. Training in post-colonial studies, theories and methods pertaining to the study of religion, cross-cultural engagement, and/or gender studies is desirable. Knowledge of relevant languages is expected. An interest in working with general education students is necessary. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed the Ph.D. by August 2019. The teaching expectation will be 6 classes spread over three terms including a “J” term in January, and will include an introductory course in Islam, a Religion major/minor “gateway” course: RELG 150: Encountering Religion, upper-level courses in Islam designed by the new hire, and a required, sophomore-level Reasoned Examination of Faith offering through which the candidate might teach Muslim-Christian interactions.
