Religion – Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a full-time one-year Teaching Fellow position in Religion beginning in August of the 2018-2019 academic year. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus.  Rock Island, Illinois, is part of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents, located about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.

We seek a candidate with expertise in Islam.  Additional expertise and focuses might include one or more of the following:  Muslim-Christian interactions, Inter-faith dialogue, Gender and Religion, and contemporary Islamic movements within and beyond North America and Western Europe. Candidates should have graduate-level training in theories and methods pertaining to the study of religion. Training in post-colonial studies, race and ethnic studies, cross-cultural engagement, and/or gender studies is desirable. Expertise in relevant languages is expected. The candidate should complement and extend the department’s existing strengths in South and East Asian religions, theology, scripture, and Christian ethics.  Preference will be given to candidates who will have completed the Ph.D.

The teaching expectation will be 7 classes spread over three trimesters, which will include an introductory course in Islam taught in the Fall Term, the Religion major/minor “gateway” course: RELG 155: Encountering Religion, an upper-level course in Islam, and a required, sophomore-level Christian traditions offering through which the candidate might teach Muslim-Christian interactions.
