The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut is seeking an established scholar to fill the position of the Sheikh Zayid Chair of Islamic and Arabic Studies. Candidates for the Zayid Chair are required to have made distinguished contributions in one or more fields of Islamic Studies. Priority will be given to specialists in Islamic jurisprudence, Prophetic tradition, speculative theology (kalam), Qur’anic studies, and Islam and Muslims in the modern and contemporary world.
The Sheikh Zayid Chair will be expected to develop research activity in Islamic and Arabic Studies, encourage collaboration and interaction between all departments in AUB in which Islamic Studies plays a role, and foster international liaisons with the community of scholars in the field world-wide. The successful candidate is expected to offer graduate and undergraduate courses and to supervise research in relevant fields in the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages and the Department of History and Archaeology. Depending on areas of expertise, the Sheikh Zayid Chair may have a joint appointment in more than one department. The appointment is of one year to begin on August 15, 2018.
